What Is Beltane?
For thousands of years, May 1st has marked Beltane on the Gaelic calendar. This ancient fertility festival celebrates the arrival of summer and the bounty of the land: the flowers are in bloom, the forests and hills are teeming with newborn life, and the crops are growing. After long months of cold, the land is once again alive.
If there is any one practice related to Beltane, it's the bonfire. Beltane, alongside Imbolc, Lughnasadh, and Samhain, form the Fire Festivals, half of the ancient Wheel of the Year solar calendar. The other half is the Sabbaths, or the High Holidays, on the Solstices and Equinoxes. Each of these ancient celebrations marks the passing of time, always with a cleansing rite of fire.
Yet for Beltane, fire is more than symbolic. Landing as it does on May Day, this ancient holiday is an important moment on the Celtic calendar, when the balance tips from darkness to light as the Sun slowly moves towards its zenith overhead. Bonfires were lit in honor of the Sun, seen as a protective father figure, to ask for protection as crops and herds began to grow in the warm Spring weather.
