What Is Samhain?
The origin of today's Halloween, the tradition of Samhain travels to us from Ireland's distant past. The traditional Celtic beginning of winter, Samhain is the period when the Veil, the invisible barrier between the world of mortals and the Otherworld of the gods and ancestors, is at its thinnest. At this time, spirits of the dead, as well as things much more malevolent, are able to pass into the mortal realm to do good or ill. Historically, children would carve wicked faces into hollowed-out turnips and put candles in them to scare evil spirits away, the ancestor of our jack o'lanterns.
Samhain is closely associated with the Morrigan, a powerful pan-Celtic goddess of war, triumph, and guardianship ("rig," in Indo-European languages, denotes a king or queen who has earned their place by protecting their people). On Samhain, the Morrigan was said to ride forth from Oweynagat, or the Cave of the Cats, near the modern city of Roscommon.
